The
DOs and DON'Ts of Search Engines
|
|
What
TO do:
1.
FIRST! DO Carefully Title each page in your
site that you plan to submit to search engines.
The Title should be close, and include the
major search phrase you wish people to find
your site under.
2.
SECOND! DO Carefully choose your description...
this should repeat your major search phrase,
and include 1 or 2 minor search words.
3.
THIRD! DO Carefully choose 10-20 keywords.
4.
DO Submit by hand when ever possible, and
submit to the BEST URL.... many engines
have several submission pages. SOME engines
"favor" some pages and may perhaps
totally ignore some of their submission
pages. Just a theory.... but at this time
I believe it is true.
5.
DO Check your search engine status through
a statistics page (where and what searches
people are doing to find your site. And,
regularly search for your site by hand.
What
NOT to do:
DON'T
FALL FOR THE CONS! Many
business want to sell you their search
engine submission services..... beware!
They will have you "test" your
site for free to see the ranking - tell
you how poor your site is ranked and promise
you for a LOW price they will get you
listed in the top 10!!! However, they
can't get EVERYONE in the top ten... that
is impossible! And, I know many of these
companies do not give accurate reports
about the site listings. I have used one
of the most reputable services on the
Internet with poor results.... sites I
submitted by hand were listed months before
listings were showing up from the paid
service.
1.
DON'T Repeat submission every day or even
every week. The search engines do not like
it when you submit your pages too often.
It won't help you and can definitely hurt
yo, your page will be penalized and it may
be kicked out entirely.
2.
DON'T Repeat keywords. You should be very
careful how you use your keywords on your
site. Do NOT repeat them over and over (ex:
art,art,art, ...)
3.
DON'T Over populating your Meta keywords.
Don't have a list of words that could make
up a dictionary stuffed into your meta keyword
tag. . Keep the number of meta keywords
down to around 10-20 most important words.
4. DON'T use Tiny text. The search engines
are aware of this "little" game, and now
if your font size is less then 2 in your
html, you will have problems ranking with
the engines. Keep the text readable or don't
put it there at all.
5. DON'T use Same color text and background.
Another trick (worked in the past) devised
by the leaders in web page optimization
- adult sites. Make the text the same color
as the background so that no one can read
it. Sorry, like the above tip it has been
found out.
6. DON'T design 100% CGI driven sites. The
search engines are smart, but not smart
enough to follow cgi's that have "?" marks
in them to delineate the script name and
the parameters. If every link on your home
page is a cgi call, the spider will not
follow them to plumb the depths of your
site.
7. DON'T Submit too many pages. There is
absolutely no need to submit every page
on your site to an engine. In fact they
don't like it and your ranking will suffer
because of it. Submit your home URL and
any pages you think are key (keep it below
5).
8.
DON'T Use Frames without a noframes section.
Some search engine spiders will not go into
your frames. Do a search on GOOGLE sometime
to see why most don't. You will get many
pages that are just a part of a frame site
that is un-navagatble.... a "top corner"
for example. Have a link to every page on
your site in the noframes section.
9.
DON'T design 100% flash sites without a
front page or doorway pages. You can do
great things with flash for presentation,
but the search engines aren't interested
in watching movies. They can't grab any
of the information they need out of the
flash movies to decide how to place your
site.
